These structures attract cleaner fish, which in turn draw manta rays that visit to have parasites, dead skin, and debris removed. Well-known locations such as Hanifaru Bay, Rasdhoo Atoll, and parts of Ari Atoll are particularly rich in these cleaning zones due to favourable currents and high plankton availability.
When conditions align (especially during incoming currents) mantas approach with slow, intentional movements, circling above the coral heads while cleaner wrasses perform their delicate work. It is a scene that feels almost choreographed, displaying a calm harmony rarely witnessed elsewhere underwater.
How Cleaning Stations Work: Symbiosis in Action
The interaction between manta rays and cleaner fish is a powerful example of mutualistic symbiosis, where both species benefit from the exchange.
For the mantas:
Cleaner wrasses and other small reef fish remove parasites, bacteria, and loose tissue from the manta’s skin, gill slits, and even inside the mouth. This detailed grooming reduces infection risks and contributes significantly to manta health.

Experiencing a Cleaning Station as a Diver or Snorkeler
For visitors, observing mantas at a cleaning station is an unforgettable privilege—but it must be done responsibly. In places like Rasdhoo, where the main cleaning station sits atop a prominent coral block, divers usually kneel at the sandy perimeter, keeping low and still while the mantas circle above. It is one of the easiest dives in Rasdhoo; you simply kneel down on the sand around 12 meters in depth, and enjoy the show. If you remain still, the mantas may even come extremely close to you. And unforgettable eye to eye moment. But remember, we do NOT touch.
As for the snorkelers and freedivers, they must take extra care:
- Avoid hovering directly above the bommie.
- Never dive down onto the station itself.
- Maintain respectful distance and avoid blocking a manta’s path.
- If descending, approach from the side rather than from above; mantas have wide peripheral vision and are more comfortable when they can see you clearly.
Giving mantas space encourages natural behaviour and increases the likelihood of prolonged, close encounters.
Manta Rays Need Protection
Despite their grace and gentle reputation, manta rays face growing pressures worldwide. Overfishing, accidental bycatch, marine debris, habitat degradation, and climate-driven changes in plankton availability all threaten their survival. Surface Feeding
One of the most iconic sights is surface feeding, where mantas skim the upper layer of the water with their mouths wide open. Calm seas and dense plankton patches make surface feeding especially common during the southwest monsoon. Snorkelers often witness mantas swimming in slow arcs, repeatedly passing through the richest plankton clouds. Reminder to not get too close to the mantas and to never touch them.
Bottom Feeding
Although less frequently observed, mantas sometimes feed close to the seabed, especially when currents push plankton downward. In these moments, mantas swoop low over sandy patches or along reef edges, filtering food as they glide. Bottom feeding is more discreet and can easily be missed unless divers pay close attention to subtle shifts in movement and positioning.
Barrel Rolling
Barrel rolling is one of the most captivating feeding behaviours. When mantas find a particularly dense pocket of plankton, they execute tight somersaults—rolling continuously to stay within the richest part of the food source. It is an energetic and highly coordinated technique, often performed repeatedly in one spot. Barrel rolling can occur both near the surface and at mid-water depths, and it is an excellent indicator of an active and concentrated plankton patch.
Chain and Cyclone Feeding
Perhaps the most spectacular feeding formations are chain feeding and cyclone feeding, behaviours seen when several mantas gather in the same plankton-rich area. In chain feeding, mantas swim in a loose line, following one another to maximise efficiency. Cyclone feeding, which resembles a vortex of mantas spiralling upward, is far rarer. This coordinated behaviour is usually observed in areas with extremely high plankton density and involves dozens of mantas moving in a circular column—an extraordinary phenomenon that showcases their social and cooperative capabilities.
